Volunteer with us!

Volunteers serve a vital role at the Montana Science Center. Our small staff and diverse community benefit immensely from partnering with the people who live, work, recreate, and retire here. The Montana Science Center welcomes all volunteers, from those who love science to those who are just learning. Our volunteers help visitors of all ages gain an understanding of science concepts by facilitating hands-on activities and demonstrations. Volunteers tackle a variety of projects, engage in professional development, and make a real difference in their communities.

Volunteer FAQs

What do Montana Science Center volunteers do?

All our volunteers are an important part of the Montana Science Center team and contribute to our mission. Volunteering is a fun way to share your passion for inspirational science learning. Volunteers can choose the types of work they are interested in. For example, if you are interested in working with day camps or educational opportunities, you can indicate that interest in your volunteer application. We will do our best to match everyone with projects that interest them.

Who can volunteer at Montana Science Center?

All ages and types of people are welcome to volunteer at the Montana Science Center. For more information, contact us at info@montanasciencecenter.org.

What experience or education do I need to volunteer?

For many of our volunteers, a background in education or STEM is useful, but it is not required in most cases. If a volunteer position requires specific experience or qualifications, it will be noted in the position description. Generally, we will provide all the training that you need to be a successful volunteer at the Montana Science Center. However, we also welcome those who want to lend their professional expertise to the Montana Science Center, including those with extensive STEM experience.

How much time does volunteering take?

We welcome volunteers for all kinds of projects. Whether you’re able to spend years volunteering with us or just want to spend a few hours tackling a project or working on a special event, we’d love to have you. The length and time commitments of volunteer positions vary, though we generally ask for volunteers to commit to at least bimonthly volunteer shifts over the course of six months. Exceptions include positions that are seasonal, temporary, or offered on particular dates and times. Check out the volunteer position descriptions for more details.

Do you offer one time or short term volunteer positions?

Yes! We offer special event volunteer opportunities, which will be posted on our website. Additionally, many of our adult and teen volunteer positions are short-term.

What is the application process for volunteers?

Once we receive your application, we will determine if your skills and availability match our current volunteer position needs. We will then contact you to learn more about you. Individuals invited to join the volunteer team will also complete a background check. Volunteers are then invited to orientation and position training. Please send completed volunteer applications to: info@montanasciencecenter.org

Do you offer group volunteer opportunities?

Yes! With advance notice, we can usually accommodate volunteer groups of 10 or fewer individuals. Group volunteer projects in the past have included activities such as gardening, cleaning exhibit spaces, inventorying materials, painting, assisting with events, and participating in programs.

What are the benefits of volunteering at the Montana Science Center?

Montana Science Center volunteers have access to exhibits, events, and programs.
